In country some PCVs were placed in very isolated sites and were very welcoming of visitors. As Christine and I made our way across the country, we stayed mostly with other PCVs and their host families.
An Uzbek road trip like the one I took was more akin to taking the PCV underground rail road, this is because Peace Corps Managers frown on PCVs leaving their assigned sites without tons of stamped Soviet style official paper work. At times I could not help but laugh, hearing some stories and personally seeing PCVs and Uzbeks use ingenuity to circumvent the never ending bureaucracy.
